Acupuncture & fertility

Attempting to have a baby isn’t always as straight forward as it may seem. Couples are often faced with a minefield of emotions and life changing decisions, not to mention the financial burden of fertility tests and IVF. Acupuncture has a long and successful history in reproductive medicine and as a supportive therapy alongside assisted conception techniques such as IVF.

It can be used to help boost female and male fertility, prepare the body for conception and pregnancy and to treat underlying conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and irregular menstrual cycles.
Acupuncture is good for relieving stress which is often a big factor in a couple’s difficulty to conceive. Acupuncture is good at redressing hormonal imbalances which are often associated with fertility issues as well as for boosting blood flow to the reproductive organs.

Improve your chances of IVF success

Acupuncture can also be a valuable complement to IVF for both men and women helping to substantially improve the chances of success. As acupuncture is used to treat each individual as a whole acupuncture will also help in maintaining a calm mind and healthy body throughout the IVF cycle.

Having acupuncture pre and post embryo transfer can be particularly useful. A recent Meta – analysis, published by the British Medical Journal in March 2008, suggests that women undergoing IVF, who also have acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer, have a much higher chance of conceiving than those who don’t.

Support post natal recovery

Of course acupuncture can also be used to help new mothers too. The early weeks and months following the birth can be very demanding both physically and emotionally. A few sessions of acupuncture can be really helpful in relieving backache and exhaustion. It can help you to relax and rebuild your energy as well.
